site-specific installation | Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson - ILLUMInations, 54th Venice Biennale | 2011The installation explores the political, socio-economic, and personal forces that affect life in the present day. The 2011 exhibition was organized by the Icelandic Art Center in Reykjavík, Iceland, under the commissionership of Dorothée Kirch, and was curated by Ellen Blumenstein.
Preceding the Biennale, we staged and recorded a public performance that while singing the phrase: “This is an announcement from Libia and Ólafur: Your country doesn’t exist”.
The score was composed by Icelandic composer Karólna Eiríksdóttir. For the duration of the Biennale, a video installation of the performance has been displayed in the Pavilion of Iceland. On 2nd and 3d of June, performances have also been staged in the canals of the city.
